Dune: Awakening Weapons & Gear Guide

Melee and ranged weapons, shields, armor and stillsuits in Dune: Awakening. Gear tiers, crafting requirements, and the best early-game loadout.

Case Answer Verified Solution

Combat on Arrakis is built around the Holtzman Shield: fast ranged darts get deflected, so the reliable answer to a shielded enemy is a slow, charged melee heavy attack. Weapons split into blades and ranged sidearms, armor tiers climb from Aluminum through Duraluminum to Plastanium, and stillsuits trade armor for water recovery. Gear comes from crafting, Deep Desert testing-station drops, and the Exchange.

The gear system at a glance

Dune: Awakening’s combat gear falls into four layers: melee weapons, ranged weapons, the personal Holtzman Shield, and armor. The layer that dictates all the others is the shield, because it reverses the usual shooter-versus-melee assumption. Fast projectiles are deflected, slow blades get through, and that single rule decides what you carry into a fight. Progression runs through the Schools of the Imperium as well — abilities and passive bonuses sit on top of whatever physical gear you craft.

Melee weapons

Sponsored

Blades are the primary answer to a shielded opponent, and the community weapon tables are built around a charged heavy attack being the mechanic that penetrates an active Holtzman Shield. Hold the attack for a deliberate, slow swing rather than mashing fast strikes; that is the in-game translation of the books’ “slow blade” that can slip past a shield.

Representative melee weapons:

  • Crysknife — the iconic Fremen blade forged from a sandworm tooth, a high-ceiling melee weapon tied to Fremen progression.
  • Kindjal — a short blade, fast and close-quarters.
  • Impulse sword / impulse blade — a relic-style blade; community tier lists rate the best impulse-blade replicas highly for heavy-attack shield penetration.
  • Long blades — favored by the Swordmaster school, which passively boosts long-blade damage.

Melee also benefits most from Swordmaster abilities such as Knee Charge, Deflection and Eye of the Storm.

Ranged weapons

Ranged weapons are not useless — they are anti-unshielded and pressure tools. The maula pistol is the classic Fremen sidearm: a light, semi-automatic weapon firing spring-loaded darts at short range. It is cheap to field and reliable against targets not wearing an active shield, but its darts are largely deflected by a raised Holtzman Shield.

Lasguns are the other headline ranged weapon. In Dune lore and in the game’s design, a lasgun beam interacting with a Holtzman Shield produces a catastrophic explosion — so bringing one to a shielded duel is a gamble that can hurt both of you. Treat direct lasgun fire as a choice you make when you are sure the target’s shield is down.

The Holtzman Shield

The Holtzman Shield is the heart of personal combat. While active it is an energy shield that deflects fast incoming darts and projectiles, and it drains energy from an equipped power pack to do so. Two consequences matter in practice:

  • A slow, charged melee heavy attack penetrates it — this is the intended counter, which is why melee stays viable in a shooter-era game.
  • It also blocks objects leaving it, and it can be manually toggled on and off to manage power.

Shields come in Mk tiers (for example, community listings show a Holtzman Shield Mk3 added in a later patch with a short refresh time). Separate from the personal shield, bases can field their own defensive shielding. If you fight shielded, expect every opponent to have practiced the charged-heavy-attack counter; if you fight unshielded, expect to be kited by ranged users.

Armor and the Stillsuit

Armor is organized by material grade, and each grade covers three suit roles — Heavy, Stillsuit, and Scout/recon. The mid-to-end grades most often cited by community gear trackers are:

GradeExample setRole
Aluminum / DunemanDuneman Heavy, Native Stillsuit, Duneman ScoutEarly-to-mid, faction-zone viable
DuraluminumMercenary Heavy, Mercenary Stillsuit, Mercenary ScoutPre-endgame, Deep Desert entry tier
Plastanium (Tier 6)CHOAM Heavy, CHOAM Stillsuit, CHOAM ScoutEndgame, Deep Desert and PvP ready

The Stillsuit is its own design trade. It recycles your body moisture into drinkable water (see the resources guide), which roughly doubles how far you can roam from base, but it offers less protection than a pure combat suit. The correct habit is to travel in a Stillsuit and swap into Heavy armor before a fight. CHOAM Plastanium armor is the heavy endgame baseline for mitigation; the absolute strongest pieces are graded Mk6 Unique items from high-difficulty overland testing stations.

How you actually get gear

Three sources feed your loadout:

  • Crafting — needs both the right materials and a schematic. Schematics are gated separately from materials, so you need to study both. See the schematics guide for how to source them.
  • Drops — Deep Desert testing stations, overland labs, crashed ships and dungeons drop rare schematics and Mk6 Unique weapons and armor. These are contested, weekly-rotating spots; see the Deep Desert page.
  • The Exchange — the player market. You list in person at an Arrakeen or Harko Village terminal; pricing and fee rules are in the Exchange guide.

An early-to-mid loadout path

You do not start in Plastanium. A workable progression looks like this:

  1. Landing — a melee cutting tool beats fists; grab the best blade you can craft or scavenge.
  2. First hours — add a maula pistol as a cheap, semi-auto sidearm, wear a Stillsuit for water on long trips, and prioritize upgrading your Cutteray over your weapons, because better ore unlocks everything else.
  3. Midgame — move into Aluminum then Duraluminum suits, pick a role (Heavy, Stillsuit or Scout), and start farming testing stations for Mk schematics.
  4. Endgame push — craft toward Plastanium (Tier 6), and chase graded Mk6 Uniques from the hardest testing stations.

Augments: the late-gear system

Around Chapter 3, Funcom added Augments: once you have unlocked enough Crafting specialization traits, you can attach augments to Unique Tier 6 Plastanium weapons and armor to push their stats further. Augments come in five quality tiers, and how many times an item can be augmented is controlled by your augment limit, itself raised through the Crafting specialization track. Augment schematics drop from the new overland dungeons. This is a late-system, so do not block your early progression waiting for it.

How to read this page: the Holtzman Shield deflects fast projectiles and is penetrated by a slow charged heavy attack; the Aluminum / Duraluminum / Plastanium grade ladder; and the Augment system on Unique Tier 6 gear are all confirmed by Funcom patch notes and the community wiki. Specific weapon names and tier placements, exact Mk numbers, and “best in slot” rankings are community-aggregated and shift each patch — treat them as a starting point, not a fixed verdict. The loadout path and “swap out of the Stillsuit before a fight” advice is our own judgment.

Frequently asked questions

Why do guns stop working against shielded enemies?

An active Holtzman Shield deflects fast-moving objects, including pistol darts. The counter is the charged melee heavy attack — the game's 'slow blade' — which penetrates the shield. Lasgun fire into a shield is especially dangerous.

Should I wear a Stillsuit into a fight?

No. Stillsuits recover your body's water but give noticeably less armor than combat gear. Wear one for long travel and gathering, and swap into heavier armor before a fight.

Where do the best weapons and armor come from?

Crafted gear needs schematics and materials; the strongest Mk6 Unique weapons and armor drop from Deep Desert testing stations and overland dungeons; anything on the open market is bought from other players at an Exchange terminal.

What is the best early loadout?

A reliable melee blade plus a maula pistol as a sidearm, basic scrap/iron armor, and a Stillsuit for travel. Upgrade the Cutteray and follow schematics before you chase rare weapons.
